Top 10 Cradle Robbers

November 9, 2008 · Filed in List All, People · 2 Comments

I can think of lots of reasons why people may be interested in ‘robbing the cradle’. Perhaps the cradle robber is in denial about how old he or she really is. I know I often realize with a shock that I am over 30… imagine what it would be to be 60… or 80? Others might think that they look young and beautiful because they are standing next to someone who is young and beautiful; however, I would like to point out that if you want to make yourself look good it’s smarter to stand next to someone who is LESS good looking than you.

While the rich and famous get the most publicity, they are not the only ones cradle robbing. It might seem like it but that’s only because their relationships are more newsworthy than the average person. During my research for this article I found online communities and support groups for lots of every day people involved in this type of relationship. They describe the nature of their relationships as ‘age-gap’ rather than cradle robbing (sounds nicer). There are also less subtle groups, such as sugardaddybabes.com and dateamillionaire.com full of young ladies (and men) who are eager to date a cradle robber.

Do you know a cradle robber? Or perhaps you are one? Read the guidelines  and you can do the math yourself to see if you fit the guidelines.

A cradle robber is a person who taps people significantly younger than themselves. If X is the older person’s age then they are labeled a cradle robber if they date a person who is less than half of their age plus 7 years. But for this function to work, X must be greater than or equal to 18, as dictated by Urban Dictionary at http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=cradle%20robber

Example: Demi More was 42 when she married Ashton Kutcher (27) in 2005. 42 divided by 2, plus 7 is 28, but Ashton was 27 so that makes Demi a cradle robber (by the way, way to go, Demi!).

I struggled with placing the people on this list in order. It was hard to decided who was more of a cradle robber: is it someone who has been in more relationships or someone who really stretches that age gap? If you can make a good argument for why the order should be different, I’ll listen. Here is what I decided:

10. Demi Moore

Demi Moore & Ashton Kutcher

Demi Moore & Ashton Kutcher

When Demi Moore was busy being ‘Jules’ in St. Elmo’s fire (1985), Ashton Kutcher was 7 years old. He’s 16 years younger than her and they have been together for 5 years. Everyone knows about Demi and Ashton and, before that, Demi and Bruce. Here are two more relationships that land helped to land Demi Moore on our list:

  • Oliver Withcomb - Moore dated him in 2001. He’s a martial arts instructor and seven years younger than her.
  • Leonardo DiCaprio – They dated in 1998. He was 24 and she was 36.

I’m only giving her one cradle because the other two relationships were very short. Also, it seems like Kutcher and Moore are very happy and I think we’re all ready to leave them alone already.

Top 10 Celebrities Who Read Their Own Obituary

November 7, 2008 · Filed in List All, Bizarre, People · Comment

It is journalistic practice for rookies to start writing obits as their first assignments when first diving into the newspaper world. Sometimes these writers get ahead of themselves and some celebrities will find out that their obituaries have been written before their demise. And that means that a few of those people have the misfortune of actually seeing those obits printed before they have passed beyond the mortal realm.

To be included on this list, the celebrity or historical figure had to be of some significance, either famous or infamous and declared dead by in a major news media market such as a newspaper, on radio, on television or on the Internet. Imagine their surprise when they found out they were dead – talk about morbid curiosity!

10. Daniel Boone

Explorer of the American West and folk hero, Daniel Boone was made a folk hero because of the publication of his exploits in dime serials of the day. Kentucky’s “first” resident, Boone’s obit was erroneously printed a few years before he died at the age of 86 in 1820. Who knows, the newspaper who put his obit in early might have thought he was exploring really new territory – beyond the grave!?

10 Presidents Who Won with Less Than 50% of the Vote

November 4, 2008 · Filed in List All, People, Politics · Comment

A wise man once said, “popularity is overrated,” but when you are the president it certainly to gain the majority of the votes. Unfortunately for many of our previous presidents they stepped into our country’s most powerful role with less than half of our country’s support. Not a ringing endorsement and a heck of a way to start your term as president.

John Quincy Adams - 30.5% of the popular vote in 1824

This election is notable for being the only time since the passage of the Twelfth Amendment in which the presidential election was decided by the House of Representatives, as no candidate received a majority of the electoral vote. This presidential election was also the only one in which the candidate receiving the most electoral votes did not become president (because a majority, not just a plurality, is required to win). It is also often said to be the first election in which the president did not win the popular vote, although the popular vote was not measured nationwide. At that time, several states did not conduct a popular vote, allowing their state legislature to choose their electors.

Top 10 Worst Jon Bon Jovi Cover Songs

October 10, 2008 · Filed in List Music, People · Comment

The only thing worse than an actual Bon Jovi song, however, is Jon Bon Jovi doing a version of someone else’s, automatically better original. Worse still, would be someone actually COVERING a Bon Jovi song, but to the best of our knowledge, the likelihood of this occurring is about as probable as a meteor the size of the state of New Jersey striking the earth.

Since their own music wasn’t bad enough, here is Bon Jovi doing what they do best—spilling their own REO Speedwagon / Journey / Three Dog Night / Springsteen-lite effluent on some of the world’s most well-beloved songs. Luckily for all concerned, these are so popular that nobody would mistake them for Bon Jovi originals and mislead any future generations. Here, in no particular order, because the pork rendering plant stench emanating from each, is indistinguishable from the other, is our 10 Worst Bon Jovi Cover Songs of All Time:

10. Save the Last Dance for Me, Pomus and Shuman. Among the ‘better’ song on this list, only in the sense that it’s better to have testicular cancer than say, lung. The presence of Willy Deville’s voice means fewer verses for JBJ

Top 10 Self-Destructive Child Actors

October 1, 2008 · Filed in List All, Movies, People, Television · 4 Comments

Can you have much too much, much too young? These ten junior celebrities are proof that yes, you can. From drug and drink addictions to car and relationship wrecks, fame can spoil even the youngest souls. Fortunately, some child stars have overcome their destructiveness, whereas others are fading away, and may more have burnt out completely.

10. Haley Joel Osment

Hayley nearly did see dead people when he flipped his car in July 2006 driving under the influence of alcohol and in possession of marijuana. The LA born star, who made his debut in Forrest Gump aged just six, is best known for his harrowing performance in Sixth Sense and, despite his brush with the law, is still a successful actor, most recently in the heart-warming tale, Home of the Giants. Haley is at the top of the list for being, thankfully, the least self-destructive young actor of the bunch. After his misdemeanor, he paid his fines and did his time, which were $1500 and 26 AA meetings respectively.

Top 10 Metrosexuals

September 23, 2008 · Filed in List All, Bizarre, People · Comment

These truly modern guys are unafraid to buy beauty products, wear makeup, and get pedicures. Confident in their masculinity, they push the envelope as society’s top ten metrosexuals. Metros have been defined as “straight guys who look gay”.

10. Dave Navarro

Rockers are renowned for their use of makeup and their love of chains and leather: Dave Navarro takes it even further. In his reality show with Carmen Electra, she confessed that she never thought she would end up with a guy who “spends more time in front of the mirror than I do”. They are now divorced, but probably not because Dave is a confirmed metrosexual.

10 Crazy Royals

September 18, 2008 · Filed in List All, History, People · 1 Comment

When someone is talked about as being crazy, they usually aren’t the ones calling the shots. However, there have been a few notable cases of these mad men or women, all of royal blood, ruling countries, much to the chagrin of their subjects or much to the delight of their parents who act as regents. Luckily it hasn’t happened all that recently – can you imagine the posh padding required to hold an insane royal? Only the finest 1,000 count Egyptian cotton for the cell walls and a straight jacket made of the best royal purple silk and tied with gold roping.

And hopefully these 10 wackos will stay in the recesses of history and not pop up again – you know the whole history repeating itself?

10. George III of the United Kingdom

King George III ruled Great Britain and Ireland for some 59 years of his life. While he was somewhat gifted in the military campaign aspect defeating France in extended engagements once during Napoleon’s reign and once during the Seven Year War, his biggest loss, besides his marbles, was that of the American Colonies. Born in 1738, he didn’t start losing his mental health until later in life, supposedly from arsenic poisoning. If someone was trying to kill him, they should have tried harder.

Top 10 Amazing Savants

September 16, 2008 · Filed in List All, Bizarre, People · Comment

Savantism is a neurological condition derived from autism - with a twist. “Savants” were formerly coined “Idiot-Savants”, as in the past, those born with the condition were condemned to mental institutions for their atypical social behavior. As the years progressed, acting “abnormally” became less taboo, and it was realized that these extraordinary individuals made up for their social inadequacies by excelling in a particular area - be it art, math or music. Here’s a list of exceptional people whose unique skills border the paranormal…

10. Henriett Seth-F

Hungarian born Henriett is particularly unique, considering she falls within the 16 percent minority of female savants. After her birth in 1980, she was soon diagnosed with a neurological disorder after failure to make eye contact, general reclusiveness and chronic “echolalia”, a condition which meant she involuntarily repeated the last words said to her. However, she was playing the flute by age seven and was painting by age 13. This prolific writer has also won the XIIth International Literature Competition, Geza Gardonyi Prize for art and had several books and articles published, including “Autism: Another World”.

Top 10 Most Famous Preserved Body Parts

September 12, 2008 · Filed in List All, Bizarre, Medical, People · 7 Comments

The final resting places of most historical figures are highly guarded and viewed by many as shrines or at least veritable cash cows for the societies guarding them. For a very few of those figures, some of their remains have been “preserved” for posterity, the sake of science or just egotistical reasons. Sure anyone can see a dinosaur bone in a museum, but wouldn’t you rather see the brain of a famous scientist or the shattered bone of a martyred revolutionary?

The order of this list was derived from the relative popularity of the dead historical figure along with the circumstance of how or why the “artifact” was preserved.

10. Dan Sickles’ Leg

A Union general who lost his leg to a cannon at the Battle of Gettysburg, Major General Dan Sickle was not a brilliant man. After seeing high ground in front of his troops, he ordered them to move about a mile away, which was more indefensible and where they were effectively decimated. His leg was hit by a cannonball and had shattered, but he persevered until his leg was amputated that afternoon. Sickles’ leg and the cannonball are displayed at the American National Museum of Health and Medicine since he remembered that the Army Surgeon General was building a display of morbid anatomy along with the projectiles that caused it. Too bad this insubordinate’s legacy lives on because of that directive.
