Objectum sexuality, or “objectophilia” is when individuals have strong emotional, romantic (and even sexual) feelings towards particular inanimate objects. Some of them find the mere idea of having such a relationship with another human ridiculous.
Here are ten cases where people fell in love with an object, and some who even married them.
10. Amy Wolfe
In Love With: a Fairground Ride
Amy Wolfe Weber is a church organist in Pennsylvania, and is married to an 80-foot magic carpet-themed ride called the 1001 Nachts, featured in Knoebels Amusement Park. This was after a courtship that consisted of 3,000 rides over the course of ten years. She even changed her surname to Weber, after the manufacturer of the ride. She has been attracted to the fairground ride since the age of 13, explaining, “I was instantly attracted to him sexually and mentally. I wasn’t freaked out, as it just felt so natural, but I didn’t tell anyone about it because I knew it wasn’t ‘normal’ to have feelings for a fairground ride.” She also sleeps with a picture of the ride on her ceiling and carries its spare nuts and bolts around with her.
You might be asking how she feels about other people riding her husband. Well, she claims that they share a physical and spiritual relationship and she does not get jealous when others get involved.
9. Eija-Riita Berliner-Mauer
In Love With: the Berlin Wall
Eija-Riitta Berliner-Mauer lives in Liden, northern Sweden, and was married to the Berlin Wall in 1979 (Berliner-Mauer literally means “Berlin Wall” in German). She says to have fallen in love with the structure at the young age of seven when she first saw it on television, and began collecting pictures of the wall and saving up to visit.
Other than just the Berlin Wall however, she also finds constructions like bridges, fences, railroad tracks, and gates physically attractive, saying “I find long, slim things with horizontal lines very sexy.” Since the Berlin Wall was torn down in 1989 (which apparently constitutes a divorce,) she has started dating a garden fence. She finds the idea of being attracted to another human being ludicrous.
8. Erika Eiffel
In Love With: the Eiffel Tower
Erika Eiffel is, as you might have guessed, famously “married” to Paris’ famous monument, the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower isn’t her first love though; she first fell in love with Lance, a bow (who helped her become a world-class archer), and she has also been attracted to the Berlin Wall (such a ladies’ wall) and a piece of fence. She claims the condition is due to her upbringing, in which she was sexually abused and abandoned by her parents: “If I am the way I am today because of everything that happened to me, then I’m alright with it,” she says, “I wouldn’t change who I am now.”
She has been in many newspapers, magazines and documentaries. She is the first to publicly admit having objectum sexuality and is also the founder of OS Internationale, a community for other objectum-sexuals from all over the world, and manages it from her home in Berlin. The community consists of over 200 people.
7. Lee Jin-Gyu
In Love With: His Body Pillow
South Korean Lee Jin-Gyu is married to his “dakimakura,” a body pillow he purchased from Japan, which features an image of Fate Testarossa, a girl from the anime series Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. They had been dating for six years prior to their marriage. Lee’s friend said, “They go out to the park or the funfair, where it will go on all the rides with him. Then when he goes out to eat, he takes it with him and it gets its own seat and its own meal.” He said that Lee was “completely obsessed” with his pillow. He even traveled to Japan to marry it, and the nuptials were officiated by a local priest. Lee even fit the pillow with a custom wedding dress. However, like many commitment-phobic dudes, he is still unsure about the marriage, saying “My love for fate is unchangeable, but I will take more time to think about our marriage.”
6. Nathaniel
In Love With: His Car
Featured on an episode on TLC’s My Strange Addiction, Nathaniel is in love with his car, a red 1998 Monte Carlo that he has named Chase. He cannot go more than 24 hours without seeing Chase, rarely allows others to drive her, and has a picture of her as his screensaver at work. Nathaniel also goes on dates with his car, kisses her first thing in the morning, and gives her bubble baths and birthday presents.
He has also admitted to having not only an emotional, but a sexual relationship with his car, which involves a rubbing against it and masturbation. Nathaniel says it all started when he was younger and didn’t have many friends, and his father blames himself for Nathaniel’s situation. Chase isn’t his first love however- it was Dylan, a model car he received as a child and still sleeps with every night. Playas gon’ play.
5. Sal 9000
In Love With: a Videogame Character
A man from Tokyo, Japan, is married to Nene Anegasaki, a pleasant, beautiful girl who is always there when he needs her and doesn’t pick fights. Sounds ideal, right? Just one problem- Nene Anegasaki happens to be a videogame character from the Nintendo DS game Love Plus. The man, who goes by the username Sal 9000, married her at the age of 27, and the ceremony was witnessed live by thousands online. Although Japan’s internet community has seen relationships and marriages between avatars, this was the first one ever between human and avatar. Sal says he doesn’t feel the need to find a human girlfriend, and that Nene is better than one anyways- “She doesn’t get angry if I’m late in replying to her. Well, she gets angry, but she forgives me quickly.”
Hiroshi Ashizaki, an author for internet and game addiction, thinks that Sal 9000 isn’t an extreme case. He says, “Today’s Japanese youth can’t express their true feelings in reality. They can only do it in the virtual world … It’s the reverse of reality that they can only talk about what they feel to a friend in the virtual world.”
4. Amanda Whittaker
In Love With: the Statue of Liberty
Amanda Whittaker, a shop assistant from Leeds, England, is in a long-distance relationship with the Statue of Liberty. She first became infatuated with the monument in 2007, when she saw a photo of her friend with the statue online. She says it’s not the first time she’s been in love with an object, saying that she had a passionate love affair with a drum kit when she was a teenager.
She has visited the statue many times, and claims that just touching the monument gave her an orgasm: “Libby satisfies my lovemaking needs.” She has also created a shrine to Libby in her home, keeps a six-foot replica of it in her bedroom, and has even changed her surname to Liberty.
3. Reighner Deleighnie
In Love With: a Statue
Reighner Deleighnie is yet another woman in a relationship with a statue, this time a 3-foot depiction of the Greek god Adonis. She first bought the statue for £395 and named it Hans, since the hit song “Slow Hand” by the Pointer Sisters was playing in the cab when she brought him home. She now spends hours each day with it — reading and talking to Hans and keeping him close during dinner and watching television, and kissing and caressing him while imagining them walking through meadows or by the seaside. However, she confesses she could never marry Hans, as she couldn’t possibly stay faithful.
2. Edward Smith
In Love With: Over a Thousand Cars
Edward Smith’s current girlfriend is a white Volkswagen Beetle named Vanilla. He says he has never been attracted to men or women and says, “I’m a romantic. I write poetry about cars, I sing to them and talk to them just like a girlfriend. I know what’s in my heart and I have no desire to change.” He claims that his most intense sexual experience was with a helicopter from the hit 1980’s TV show Airwolf.
Apart from Vanilla, he has had relationships with other cars, such as with Victoria, a 1969 VW beetle with whom he had a relationship for five years. Smith also admits to having sex with over 1000 cars, starting at the age of 15, a lot of them belonging to strangers or car showrooms. So he’s basically Gene Simmons, only his women have far more junk in the trunk. Literally.
1. Davecat
In Love With: Dolls
Davecat lives with his wife and mistress, Sidore Kuroneko and Elena Vostrikova, respectively. However, they’re both dolls, covered in artificial skin made of silicone. They even have fake tongues. While they’re technically love dolls, manufactured for sex, Davecat (a nickname he prefers to go by) sees the dolls not just as sexy things, but as life partners.
He also considers himself an activist for synthetic love and the rights of synthetic humans. He admits that, “my reasons for purchasing her were 70 percent sex, 30 percent companionship. I’ve always been attracted to artificial women such as mannequins, and especially Gynoids, which are robots made in the likeness of human females.” However, later he began to regard her as a synthetic person, and not simply an object. He says, “It seemed perfectly normal for me to treat something that resembles an organic woman the same way I’d treat an actual organic woman.”
Even before he knew about the dolls, he’d already identified himself as a technosexual, someone who’s attracted to robots. He has also been featured in My Strange Addiction, in an episode named “Guys and Dolls.”
