A Phone Company Once Offered Someone With An $11,721,000,000,000,000 Bill An Instalment Plan

Being overcharged is terrible, not only do you have to lovingly stroke your bank balance to reassure it that it will be turned into beer vouchers soon and that the numbers are just a mistake, but you also have to jump through a bunch of hoops to convince whomever it is that’s billing you that, no you didn’t spend $400 on sandwiches.

The hardest conversations are always the tastiest.
The hardest conversations are always the tastiest.

So imagine the horror of the French lady who got a phone bill in the mail for 11,721,000,000,000,000 Euros. In case you’re wondering, that’s 5000 times the annual GDP of the entire nation of France itself and yes, it was a mistake. No one could use their phone that much, even if they had eight heads, or two really needy girlfriends. But here’s the kicker, when the terrified lady rang up her phone company begging them to not withdraw the money from her account and give her a negative credit rating forever. Rather than realising the mistake straight away and not be huge assholes about the whole deal, they asked her if she wanted to pay in instalments. Let that be a lesson to you. Even if you’re overcharged more money than currently exists on Earth, there’s always going to be one person out there who thinks you can afford it.

Why is on a website dedicated to Top 10 lists?

It isn’t even a list, it’s a poorly written anecdote. Is there any kind of editing process for this website any more? Can anyone just write anything down on a page and they’ll get paid for it? If so, sign me up!

Also, what is with the poorly thought-out, nonsensical, ‘let this be a lesson to you’ moral at the end?

This story doesn’t suggest that someone will always assume you can afford something. It suggets that some people can dislike their job so much that they will just pass every issue up to their line-manager because they cant be bothered to engage their brain.

Screw whoever wrote this ‘content’, and screw whoever thought this deserved a place on the front page. Lazy content like this shows the trajectory of this website.

I think sites like this and listverse have just been opssesed with making money out of the site recently instead of when they first made the site and actually wrote about what hey cared

        Hi there.

I apologise if this content isn’t something you enjoyed. The Fun Facts For The Day feature is something that I’ve been heading up for a while now to share single facts in a much more condensed format than the traditional lists published on this site. I love the idea which is why I head up this section.

By all means submit ideas to Toptenz, it pays 50 dollars an article, the link is at the top of the page. If you think you have a better fact to share, send it to me, my Twitter, Facebook and emails links are all over this site. If I like it and think it’s awesome, I’ll pay you a few bucks out of my own pocket and put it on the front page for thousands of people to read. You don’t even need to do any writing, just a link will do.

I understand your frustration at seeing this on a website dedicated to top ten lists, but think of our frustration that top ten lists alone, the bread and butter of this site isn’t enough any more. Fun facts are another way of increasing TopTenz’s reach and potential audience and I write and research each fact personally and try to put my own personality into each and every one. For one reason, so people will hit that share button so other people can see how awesome TopTenz is.

I dislike how sites like 9/GAG and OMGFacts can just repost what they’ve gleaned from Reddit and still get millions of views, which is why I write a unique entry for every fact posted here. Because it’s not just about the fact, it’s about connecting with an author and the site so you’ll want to come back. It’s why I responded to this comment. I want to hear from people about what they want to see and want people to know I’m taking on board their comments.

I understand that TopTenz has a very dedicated fanbase and I don’t want to upset it, but I also don’t want the site itself to wither, which puts me in an awkward spot. If you have an issue with my writing style, I can address that, if you have a problem with the facts themselves, again, I can address that.

If you have a preference for the type of facts you’d like to see, or for how you’d like to see them presented, by all means, let me know. It is about making money, but it’s also about growing and maintaining a fan base and giving the site a voice that helps it stand apart from the competition. If my voice isn’t what you want to hear, let me know and I’ll change it.
