Many people believe in the existence hell; some do not. Well, we really can’t blame those who don’t believe in hell, can we? There are no scientific evidences that prove that this terrible place does exist. What we only have are accounts from the Bible that point out that hell is as real as the air we’re breathing in. We can’t see it, but it exists. And it’s a hot, dark place filled with pain, torture, and everlasting suffering.

10. Matthew Botsford

In 1992, Matthew Botsford got involved in a deadly accident that dramatically changed his life. He was hit by a stray bullet on the head outside a restaurant in Atlanta. According to him, he died on the spot, and he went into a place where there was “utter blackness” and “incredible fear”. Matthew believed this place to be hell—a place “beyond anything any words could describe”. He further described his experience in hell saying that “it was very hot” there, and that he was “chained on both my wrists and I had shackles on my ankles”.

Fortunately, for Matthew, it wasn’t his time to die yet. According to him, he saw the hand of Jesus came down to him. The Son of God rescued him from hell and gave him a second opportunity at life saying, “It’s not your time”.

Matthew was rushed into a nearby hospital where he stayed in a coma for 27 days. It’s interesting to note that Matthew was not a Christian before he allegedly went to hell. He believed in Jesus but did not have a personal relationship with him. According to him, he was his “own boss”.

Matthew has fully recovered and is now a firm believer of Jesus Christ. And he has a personal message for those who are skeptical of hell and of his supernatural experience—“Hell is a serious thing”.

9. Jennifer Perez

At the age of 15, Jennifer Perez experienced an out-of-this world event that changed her life forever—she went to heaven and hell. Jennifer was raised in a Christian family, but like most Christian teenagers, she rebelled against her parents and “left the way of the Lord”. She had ungodly friends who taught her how to drink and do drugs. Jennifer admitted that at a young age she got addicted to drugs.

One night, she was asked by a male friend to go out with him. To make the long story short, this male friend had tricked her into taking a big amount of drugs, which caused her to pass out. Had it not have been for the police, Jennifer would’ve been raped by her friend.

Jennifer was rushed to a hospital, and it was there that she claimed to have had experienced a supernatural phenomenon. Jennifer claimed that her soul came out of her physical body, and that she had seen herself lying on the hospital bed lifeless. Two mysterious men dressed in red asked her to come with them. She was taken into a beautiful place—heaven. There, she saw God and Jesus Christ who she described as “they were one inside each other, they were together”. Aside from God, she also saw Gabriel and Michael. She claimed to have known who these two angels were since their names were “written on their foreheads in gold”.

When God was finished talking to her, Gabriel grabbed her by the arm and brought her to a terrible, hot place—hell. In there, she saw people screaming in agony and suffering from the eternal pain inflicted upon them by Satan’s demons. Fortunately for Jennifer, it wasn’t her time yet. She was brought by Gabriel back to heaven where God showed her mighty things and gave her a second opportunity at life.

8. Howard Storm

Before becoming a minister of the United Church of Christ, Howard Storm was an ardent atheist and a Professor of Art at Northern Kentucky University. He was repulsed by anything that has to do with religion. He didn’t believe in the afterlife and in anything that science couldn’t explain. However, his perspective in life changed dramatically after he allegedly died and went to hell in 1985. At the time, Howard was in a hospital bed, dying from a punctured stomach.

In his book, My Descent into Death: A Second Chance at Life, Howard vividly described his brief stay in hell and how he was rescued by Jesus Christ. Right after he died, Howard was invited by some “unknown beings” to come with them. At first, they were friendly and warm. Howard described them as “more like silhouettes, or shapes”. He couldn’t clearly identify them because they were in a fog or haze. The more Howard came closer to them the more they went deeper into the haze.

After following these strange beings for some time, they started to become aggressive towards him. Eventually, they attacked him viciously. To be more specific, they “began to tear off pieces of my [Howard’s] flesh”.  After being beaten to death, Howard’s “inner voice” urged him to pray. Reluctantly, he uttered phrases which he taught were religious since at the time he didn’t know how to pray. Miraculously, the strange beings stopped attacking him and they disappeared.

Once more, Howard’s inner voice urged him to ask Jesus to save him. Deep within himself, he screamed, “Jesus, please save me”. And true enough, Jesus did save him and give him an opportunity to change his life. Since this harrowing experience, Howard has dramatically changed his life. He is now a devoted follower of Christ.

7. Bill Wiese

Unlike Howard Storm and Matthew Botsford, Bill Wiese was a devoted Christian even before he allegedly went to hell. He received Jesus Christ as his personal Savior in 1970, and for three decades he had lived a peaceful, happy life. However, this all changed when, in November 23, 1998, God allowed him to visit hell and experience it firsthand. Bill documented his short yet harrowing experience in his book 23 Minutes in Hell.

According to Bill, he was lying in his bed with his wife when suddenly “he was plunged into hell”. The time was exactly 3 o’clock in the morning. Bill defended his personal account by saying that it was not a dream. He experienced hell physically. Furthermore, he said that God didn’t send him to hell as a form of punishment but for him to become a living testimony that hell is, in fact, a real place.

Bill’s descriptions of hell are very vivid. In his book, he described how he was trapped inside a cell that was “approximately 15 feet by 10 feet by 15 feet”. What’s more interesting is that he was not alone. There were two hideous giants together with him. According to Bill, they “resembled giant reptiles but took on human form”.

After a while, two more vicious creatures entered the cell. When the light disappeared, the four foul-smelling giants started to attack him viciously. He was mercilessly ravaged by these demonic creatures. Fortunately, God had other plans for Bill. After 23 agonizing minutes, Bill was taken out by God from hell and brought back to Earth. The time was exactly 3:23 am.

This experience had a profound effect on Bill and his wife. Both of them had left their successful careers and have focused on spreading the message that hell does exist.

6. Vassula Ryden

Vassula Ryden is a 71 year old woman who claims to have been to hell and heaven. She described her afterlife experiences in her book, Heaven Is Real But so Is Hell. Vassula is a mystic who claims that in 1985 God communicated with her and told her that He will use her mightily. Since then, Vassula had received numerous visions or prophecies from God. Perfect examples of this are the 2004 tsunami in Asia and the destruction of the World Trade Center in 2001.

Just like Bill Wiese, Vassula Ryden didn’t die and then went to hell. Jesus had allowed her to experience hell and heaven so that, like Bill Wiese, she can become a living testimony that hell and Satan do exist. Many people nowadays don’t believe in hell or the afterlife, and for Vassula, this is very alarming. After making it alive out of hell, Vassula has made it her goal to share and convince people of the actuality of hell and Satan. She has been to 79 countries already and has given more than 1000 presentations.

Vassula’s descriptions of hell are very vivid. She described it to be a very big place, though she admitted that she had only seen a “small portion” of it. In addition, she also claimed to have encountered Satan who was very rude to her. Interestingly, she further described him as a powerful being who’s capable of throwing lava on the tormented souls in hell. In addition, she also claimed that the ground in hell was “like mechanic soil”. In her book, she also described her experiences in heaven saying that unlike hell, God’s kingdom is a “beautiful place full of light, but not the sun”.

5. Philip Mantofa

Philip Mantofa is a Christian pastor from Malaysia. For several years now, he has been preaching God’s word and sharing his horrible experience in hell. Mantofa is one of the lucky few whom God had allowed to experience hell firsthand. According to Mantofa, God had sent him to hell so that he can witness the “horrible tortures that had befallen all the living dead”. Furthermore, he strongly claimed that it was neither a dream nor a hallucination. Though he admitted that his body stayed on Earth, he firmly claimed that his soul experienced hell physically. All of his bodily senses were intact, and just like Bill Wiese, he was “perfectly conscious” throughout his harrowing experience.

Fortunately, for Mantofa, he was not destined to suffer in hell for all eternity. His soul who experienced all of the horrible tortures of hell went back to his earthly body the next day at 5 o’clock in the morning. This experience has greatly changed his life. Since making it alive out of hell, Mantofa has devoted his life to serving the Lord and spreading the message that “everyone who has died outside of Jesus” are destined to suffer eternally in hell.

4.  Linda Ngaoja

Linda Ngaoja is from Sierra Leone, a developing country in West Africa. She is a Christian who claimed that she has experienced death, went to hell for a brief period of time, and then made it back alive to Earth. What’s interesting about her claim is that, unlike the other people already discussed in this list, she has met famous individuals during her short visit in hell like Muammar Gaddafi and Whitney Houston. Aside from these two notable figures, she also met her parents in hell.

Linda Ngaoja has caused religious tension in Sierra Leone due to her outrageous claims. Aside from declaring that she has experienced hell firsthand, she also said that “all Catholics and Muslims are going to hell”. Sierra Leone is known for its religious tolerance, though it is a Muslim-dominated country. Many religious leaders are worried that Linda’s revelations might cause tension between the Muslim and Christian groups in Sierra Leone. For example, Linda claimed that Gaddafi allegedly wanted the mosque he built in Sierra Leone to be taken down and replaced with a church.

Linda’s revelations do not only target the Muslim and Catholic communities in Sierra Leone but also some born-again groups and even pastors. She said that these so-called Christian ministers are “more into money that spreading the message of God.”

3. Tamara Laroux

At the age of 15, Tamara Laroux attempted to end her life by shooting herself on the chest.  At the age of 6, her parents got divorced—an event that had a negative impact on her life. Since her parents got separated, she had been very unhappy. It was on September of 1985 that she decided to attempt suicide to end the loneliness and hopelessness she felt. Her original plan was to shoot herself on the head. However, a “small still voice” urged her to place it on her heart instead. Before shooting herself, Tamara asked Jesus for forgiveness.

After committing suicide, Tamara found herself in a place filled with “ultimate darkness” and suffering. She screamed in agony, realizing that the place she was in was hell. She saw hundreds of tormented souls around her. Just like her, they were suffering and “screaming in agony”. They were very close to each other, and yet they couldn’t talk with each other. She felt very lonely. In addition, Tamara also claimed that she saw a beast “with dragon-like heads upon his body” during her very brief stay in hell.

Thankfully, Jesus had other plans for Tamara. He rescued her from the indescribable horror she was in and brought her to heaven. She wanted to stay in this beautiful place, but God needed her to go back to Earth so that she can share the fact that hell is real place.  And true enough, Tamara made it back alive to Earth. The bullet that she used to end her life had miraculously “missed her heart by less than one-quarter of an inch”.

2. Angelica Zambrano

Angelica Zambrano is one of the few lucky Christians who have been given by God the opportunity to experience hell and heaven firsthand. Angelica is from Ecuador and for 23 hours she had visited both hell and heaven and has been shown the glorious second coming of the Messiah. Just like Linda Ngaoja who has seen Gaddafi and Whitney Houston in hell, Angelica Zambrano has seen famous people too. She claimed that she had witnessed the suffering of Pope John Paul II, Michael Jackson, and even the Latina singer, Selena Quintanilla Perez, in hell.

What’s more interesting about Angelica’s testimony is her claim of having seen Jesus Christ weeping over the “lost souls” who are already suffering in hell and the worst of all, for the ones who are destined to go there once they die. Furthermore, this Ecuadorian girl also claimed that during the rapture babies inside the wombs of pregnant women will be taken to heaven, but the pregnant women themselves will be left here on Earth.

1. Jose Maniyangat

What makes Jose Maniyangat unique from the other people discussed in this list is his claim of not only experiencing both heaven and hell but also seeing purgatory. Jose Maniyangat is an Indian Catholic priest who got involved in a fatal accident and was pronounced dead but through a miraculous divine intervention came back to life. On April 14, 1985, Father Jose Maniyangat was on his way to northern Kerala when he got hit by a jeep driven by an intoxicated man. He died instantly, and according to him his soul came out of his body. He was then greeted by his guardian angel who told him that he was going to escort him to heaven.

On his way to God’s Heavenly Kingdom, Jose’s guardian angel took him to hell for a short visit. Father Jose claimed that he saw Satan and his demons during his brief stay in hell. He also said that it was a very hot place, with a temperature of “about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit”, and it was filled with lost souls screaming in agony and pain. According to him, they were tormented by Satan’s demons and hell’s undying worms.

Jose’s description of Satan’s world is quite unique in that according to him there are “seven degrees of suffering or levels” in hell, and that each person is designated his own degree of suffering according to the quantity and severity of the sins he has committed while he was still alive on Earth. What’s even more interesting is that Jose claimed that he had seen fellow priests and bishops suffering in hell. After his short visit in Satan’s kingdom, Jose was take by his guardian angel to purgatory and then to heaven where he allegedly met Jesus, Mary, and even Joseph. He was then given by God the opportunity to come back to Earth and become a living testimony that hell is a real place.
